THE NETWORKING MAGICIAN

One of the best networkers I know is Collins Key.

Collins is someone you probably know, but when I met him he was just a teen magician with big aspirations. He was traditionally talented, he had charisma, he could work a crowd, he understood timing, and he was polite and professional. I’m not saying you don’t see those things in the internet world, but let’s just say they’re not always as common.

There was one issue standing in the way of Collins making it big: he had no audience. He had occasional gigs at the Hollywood members-only magician club Magic Castle, which was great for his magician skills, but super-exclusive clubs don’t usually help you develop a fan base. Most of the audiences there are magic-loving adults dressed in (strictly required) suits and ties. Not exactly Collins’ future fans.

I met Collins through mutual friends who worked for his dad’s wedding entertainment company. Chris and I were invited to see him do magic one night at the Magic Castle, which looks like a Harry Potter set right in the middle of the Hollywood Hills. We had a great time at the show, and immediately after his performance, Collins (and his dad) came by our table and started to pick our brains. By the end of the night, I had agreed to work with Collins as a social media consultant.

I wanted to help Collins because I thought he had a lot of potential to make it big. He was teed up to be on the new season of America’s Got Talent and was planning to go all the way. This had all the makings of a tipping point, but as you now know, that’s just the beginning.

“You have to spend some time getting your socials up. Let’s set a schedule, let’s get rolling!” I told him.

“I’m going to be on TV, that’s how I’ll get my name out there. What do I need social media for?” He wasn’t being difficult; he was focused on his work. And I don’t mind that at all!

“Trust me,” I said. “When you’re on AGT, every teen watching is going to be looking you up and following you. If they see you don’t take their world seriously, they won’t bother following. You may never get another chance to engage this quantity of people.”

I saw it click in Collins’ head. “Okay, I trust you,” he said.

During each victorious week of AGT, Chris and I crafted Collins’ social strategy and live tweeted from his account. I invited friends of mine who were social stars like thatsojack and jennxpenn to sit in the audience of AGT in exchange for a shout-out on social. This was a win-win collab for them and for Collins. These social stars had a fun night out, and Collins got acknowledgment from social stars with devoted fan bases.

As he progressed toward the finals, we had Collins Key trending worldwide on Twitter. He went from just a few hundred friends to an audience of tens of thousands of extremely active fans.
